What is a Cottage School?

Northwood Cottage School is a microschool designed for curious, engaged learners who thrive with individualized attention, collaborative learning, and intentional academic instruction.

Our program blends strong, direct instruction with meaningful, student-driven learning. Mornings are dedicated to foundational academics, where children build essential skills in reading, writing, and mathematics through structured lessons. In the afternoons, learners engage in inquiry and project-based work that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and deeper exploration.

Each learning pod is limited to just eight students, allowing us to provide a level of attention, support, and responsiveness that simply isn’t possible in traditional classrooms. Our size is a design choice that allows us to truly know each child and teach them well.

Every element of our program is designed to support focused learning, strong relationships, and steady academic growth. To learn more about how instruction is delivered at Northwood, including our approach to literacy, math, project-based learning, and enrichment, explore our curriculum overview.
